Is your iPhone or Android device behaving strangely? Here’s how to perform a reboot on your smartphone

Whenever your smartphone goes haywire, the quickest solution is usually to turn it off, then on again.

But sometimes it’s necessary to go further. Maybe apps are closing every time you try to open one, or your smartphone is much slower than normal.

This is a good time to consider a “force reboot” or a “hard reset.” This goes a little further than just turning off your phone, pushing a hard reset on your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phone to erase any potential headaches or problems.

Keep in mind that this is not the type of reset that wipes out everything on your smartphone. It’s basically turning off your phone completely and restarting it, so all your apps, contacts and other important information remain intact.

Here are the steps to follow to force a reboot of your device.

How to restart your iPhone

Forcing a restart of an iPhone depends on its model. If you have an iPhone 8 or later, users need to press the volume up button, then the volume down button, and finally hold down the right side button until the Apple logo appears. This may take a few seconds, so don’t panic if it doesn’t happen immediately. This process also works on the second generation iPhone SE.

On the iPhone 7, hold down the Volume Down button and the Side button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

If you still have a first generation iPhone 6 or SE, hold down the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

How to restart a Samsung Galaxy phone

If you have a Galaxy smartphone, hold down the volume down and power buttons for 7-10 seconds to force the phone to restart. If your device does not have a dedicated power button, hold down the side buttons and the volume down button for 7-10 seconds.

Samsung phones also can restart in safe mode, which allows owners to disable most third-party apps and check why their phone isn’t responding properly.
